In 2020, due to the health crisis, our dreams of tropical beaches turned into adventures in the Swiss mountains. We rediscovered our country and its traditions—comfort food, breathtaking landscapes, and passionate locals uplifted our spirits all summer long.
In 2021, with the virus still around, chances are we’ll once again spend our holidays in Switzerland. To make planning easier, here are our picks for the 7 wonders of Switzerland you absolutely must see this year—before the borders reopen.
1. Tamina Gorge

If one word describes these gorges, it’s mystical. Thermal water at over 36°C flows from them—placing Bad Ragaz on the map. Discovered in 1240, these gorges were carved over 15,000 years into a canyon 70 meters deep and 750 meters long. Once believed to have healing powers, the water drew many hopeful bathers. Easily accessible by a peaceful one-hour hike or postal bus—and lit up with a magical light show from June to October.
2. Rhine Falls

Near Schaffhausen, Europe’s largest waterfall delivers an unforgettable spectacle. The thunderous roar and misty air create a full sensory experience. Hop on a boat to get up close—even to the rock in the heart of the roaring waters.
3. Abbey Library of St. Gallen

Arguably the most beautiful and oldest library in the world, the Abbey Library of St. Gallen feels straight out of a movie. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, it houses over 170,000 volumes—including a 2,700-year-old Egyptian mummy named Shepenese.
4. Aletsch Glacier

Enjoy awe-inspiring views of Europe’s largest glacier—23 km long and holding 11 billion tons of ice. Reachable via hike or cable car, the Aletsch Glacier offers both thrills and breathtaking panoramas.
5. Oeschinensee

One of the largest alpine lakes in Europe, Oeschinensee is fed by streams from surrounding peaks. Its vivid colors and bucolic landscapes dazzle the senses. Accessible via gondola from Kandersteg plus a 30-minute walk. In summer, the lake hits 20°C—perfect for a dip.
6. Ruinaulta

Straight out of a movie set, the Rhine Gorge—also known as Ruinaulta—was formed 10,000 years ago by a massive landslide from Flims. The valley hides mysterious lakes and surreal landscapes, accessible by foot, train, or bike.
7.The Matterhorn

A true Swiss icon, the Matterhorn is the most photographed mountain in the world. First summited in 1865, its distinct shape stands out among the Alps. Its highest cable car station at 3,820 meters is the highest in the world. Spend a romantic weekend in Zermatt, enjoy the mountain hikes, and admire the peak from the village below.
